Pinewood Derby Tips!

Our Pinewood Derby is coming up Feb 3rd! Here are some tips for car and particpation.

For First Timers

The Derby is first and foremost a great chance for a parent/family and a cub scout to spend time designing and making a fun project. Race Day is a competition for the fastest car and coolest designs, but a successful Derby is one where the scouts have great experiences with their families and friends.

Tips for all racers

  1. Start Early: Begin the car-building process well in advance of the race day to allow ample time for creativity, design, and testing. Procrastination can lead to last-minute stress.
  2. Understand the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the Pinewood Derby rules. Pay attention to specifications regarding weight, size, and materials to ensure your car meets all requirements. You use the supplied kits to make your car; you can add weights up to a total weight of around 141 grams/5oz; and you need to ensure your car fits in the size dimensions required.
  3. Balance and Weight Distribution: Achieve optimal performance by carefully distributing the weight of your car. Aim for a balanced design to prevent your car from leaning to one side during the race.
  4. Smooth and Lubricated Wheels: Ensure that your car’s wheels are smooth and well-lubricated. Proper wheel preparation can significantly impact speed. Polish the axles and apply graphite or a similar dry lubricant for reduced friction. You can not use liquid lubricants like oil, this will harm our racing track.
  5. Test Your Car: Conduct test runs on a simple slope to identify any issues with the car’s alignment or performance. Make necessary adjustments based on test results. The car should run straight and smooth.
  6. Incorporate Creativity: While performance is crucial, don’t forget to have fun with the design. Encourage your scout to express their creativity by decorating the car in a way that reflects their personality or a theme they enjoy.
  7. Parental Involvement: This is a great opportunity for parents to bond with their scouts. Work together on the project, share ideas, and enjoy the process of creating something special as a team.
  8. Learn from Others: Attend workshops or reach out to experienced scout families. Learning from others who have participated in previous Pinewood Derbies can provide valuable insights and tips.
  9. Practice Good Sportsmanship: Emphasize the importance of good sportsmanship to your scout. Win or lose, it’s crucial to appreciate the efforts of fellow participants and display respect and camaraderie. If the scouts are cheering each other on, then we’re doing sportsmanship correctly.
  10. Pack Essentials on Race Day: On the day of the event, pack essentials such as spare wheels, dry lubricant, tools. Be prepared for last-minute adjustments or minor fixes. We will weigh in your car, you will have a small station to make any adjustments and try weighing in again.
  11. Celebrate the Experience: Regardless of the race outcome, celebrate the experience and the memories created. The Pinewood Derby is about more than just winning—it’s a chance to learn, grow, and enjoy the journey. The scouts will receive place-trophies at the end of the race day.

Remember, the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is as much about the process as it is about the race. Enjoy the adventure, embrace the creativity, and relish the opportunity to share this memorable experience with your Cub Scout!
